Below the Line Challenge

A big thank you to everyone that sponsored me to do the Live Below the Line Challenge.  A few weeks ago I lived on £5 worth of food for five days, so far I’ve raised £120 for Street Child charity! Woop woop.   You can still sponsor me here if you can at

I kept it simple and had porridge for breakfast and lunch and jacket potatoes with beans for dinner.  On one night I had mushy peas with my jacket and beans.  This is hardly a well rounded diet and lacks the several portions of fruit and veg that we are supposed to eat each day…I think the government have increased the daily amount of fruit and veg to 7 portions?!  I didn’t find the challenge easy at all, I tried to keep busy and distracted at work but I did crave fruit and veg and other foods that I normally eat.

I’m so glad I did the challenge, it was a real eye opener and it offered me a tiny glimpse into what it’s like to have very little money day to day.  In some countries, £5 would not only have to cover food for a week but also travel, rent, medical costs….

I want to do the challenge each year and I found it a humbling experience.  I definitely feel a lot more mindful of all the things I have in my life, things we can so easily take for granted.  This weekend my partner brought lots of fruit, vegetables and yogurt in a bid to be a bit healthier and it all came to £20. It’s crazy to think that for some people that’s nearly a months food budget.

I feel very fortunate that I don’t have to live my life this way and I had a choice to do the challenge…for many people this is a daily reality and there is no choice involved in living in extreme poverty.

I recently read a quote and it went something like this…..if you have family and friends that love you, food on your table and a roof over your head you are richer than you think…how true that is.
