10 Simple Ways to get Hygge!

I’m a tad fascinated with all things hygge related since I’ve recently read ‘The Cosy Life’ by Pia Edberg. Hygge, pronounced HOO-GA, is a Danish concept and it doesn’t have a literal translation, but the closest word to describe what it means would be ‘coziness.’ I like to think that you can personalise the concept and bring your own ideas and meaning to what hygge means. For me, hygge is about living in the moment, and loving the simple things in life. I see it as getting back to basics, spending quality time to just ‘be’ whether that’s by yourself and/or with friends and family.

The Danes are well known for being a happy bunch of people, so I think we can learn a thing or two from them. With the days getting shorter, the weather getting colder and Winter on the horizon, there’s no better time to get hygge with it. Here are 10 simple ways to bring some hygge into your life pronto:

  1. Light some candles, cosy up with a blanket, your favourite hot drink and a good book ….and a slice of cake.
  2. Watch some classic movies with a friend/loved one in the comfort of your own home.
  3. Go for a brisk Autumnal walk, collect some pine cones and use them to bring a bit of nature into your home.
  4. Cook a meal from scratch and eat it by candle light.
  5. Bake! I think anything that is baked is very hygge, there’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh baked bread…..mmmmm
  6. Make a hand made gift and/or card for someone you love.
  7. Spend quality time with loved ones and enjoy some good old fashioned talk and laughter.
  8. Ban gadgets, iPhones, TV for a night a week and instead, read a book, have a bath and relax.
  9. Go to your favourite cafe and enjoy a cuppa coffee and chill.
  10. I think mindfulness and gratitude go hand in hand with hygge. All of the above hygge things to do, can be sprinkled with a large dose of gratitude and a sense of living in the moment. When thoughts/feelings of anxiety, worry and distraction surface as they often do when you want to relax, acknowledge them, and let the feeling/thoughts come and go and bring your attention back to what you’re doing.

Have you heard about hygge? What does hygge mean for you and how do you bring some hygge into your life? Comments welcome!
